Television programmes
featuring Hawthorn
There were two programmes made quite close to each
other. In the first one, the Hawthorn Entertainment Ltd office is
featured in the first of a 4 part series which was recorded on Jan
7th, 2003, and screened on Jan 23rd, 2003.
In this series of four late night programmes, ITV1 Wales'
PRESENTERS finalist, John Parton introduced the best of club
entertainment to be seen in Wales.
Recorded at four special events at the Cwmfelin Club in Swansea,
CLASSY ACTS showcased a complete range of club acts in a live
setting.
The web site at the time goes on to say:
John has a great amount of respect towards club performers and
thinks they're a cut above the 'Stars' of "reality TV"
"These people are real entertainers who have been working for
years towards making it"
"They have to go to some of the hardest venues in the country
and have to perform for a living, which is not the easiest thing to
do," says John.
The special feature of CLASSY ACTS was that every programme
brought to the TV screen performers selected by one of Wales' top
entertainment agents.
Each agent provided the programme with a selection of acts on
his or her books.
They selected a wide range of types of entertainment - singers,
comedians, instrumental performers and all sorts of novelty
acts.
As well as exciting coverage of each of these quality showcases
of the best entertainment talent to be found in Wales, CLASSY ACTS
included behind-the-scenes interviews with the performers
themselves as they rehearse for the big night and as they get ready
to go on stage.
The second programme was called Club Life. This 6 part
production featuring Trealaw Social Club, Rhondda, South Wales
commenced on Friday Jan 3rd, 2003. We were featured on Friday, Jan
31st, 2003 when we enlisted the services of Bernard Manning &
Wendy Kane to raise funds to help the club out of a sticky
financial situation.
We then kindly declined an offer to feature in a fly-on-the-wall
documentary.
Hawthorn Expansion
Expansion plans include the development of other brand
names trading as Hawthorn Entertainment Ltd, together with updated
hardware and software systems that will benefit artistes, venues,
clients and fellow agents alike.
We are now, for example, able to send SMS messages direct from
each workstation at our office, as well as remote internet
connections to our server from home, or whichever member of our
team is 'on call'. This allows us to save many hours per week when
confirming artistes, as well as tracking them down when they are
late arriving to bookings.
Reply messages are received in the form of an email that is
picked up by the member of our team that is on duty that night.
We are the first agency in Wales to take advantage of this
technology!
We were also the beta testers for the software developers, Mainline Computers
Ltd, and were one of the first agencies in the UK to use their
software in 1991, following a personal demonstration at our home
after a marathon drive from Yorkshire by the two directors of
Mainline at the time. Our computer was then an Amstrad 286, believe
it or not!
We are currently the only agency
in the UK test driving new STi
technology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DTI
Regulations
URGENT TO ALL AGENTS / HIRERS / VENUES / CLIENTS
New regulations came into force on Tuesday 6th April 2004
It is imperative that you are aware to the changes to the
legislation which will affect all
AGENTS / HIRERS / VENUES & CLIENTS.
All agents MUST ensure that they have a copy of the Statutory
instrument 2003 No. 3319
The Conduct of Employment Agencies and
Employment Business Regulations
2003
The Regulations can
be viewed on this link
Produced in conjunction with the Recruitment & Employment
Confederation and Equity, this guidance (159Kb) provides
information on The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment
Businesses Regulations
2003
All venues and clients are advised to ensure that agents that
they deal with comply with the regulations to protect them from
possible legal action against them.
Agents that comply are usually those who have taken the trouble to
join trade associations such as The Agents Association (Great
Britain Ltd of which Neville Williams FEAA is a fellow member) and
The National Entertainment Agents Council (NEAC). We are
longstanding members of both organisations.
These organisations regularly advise the government department
responsible for policing this regulation of agents in each area
that they believe are breaking the law.
At present, they have advised the inspectors of at least 65
agencies in Wales alone who are committing offences.
Penalties for agents or persons trading as agents that do not
comply with this legislation
Up to £5000 fine per incident and up to 10 years ban
from running an agency.
The advice from the Dti to agents is: Comply or shut
immediately!!
How we find 2011
Tours
We regularly attend trade showcases all over the UK to source new
acts. A typical example is the Keeping It
Live agents only trade showcase which took place in
October at Coventry and will feature again in January at Blackpool.
The company is headed by Marcus Collingbourne, a trade colleague
that we have been associated with for over 20 years.
If anyone in Wales is reading this, he is originally a Sketty
Boy from Swansea.
Click on the
link or logo for full details of acts, pics & reviews
of showcases from the first tat took place in January 2008 at The Horseshoe
Bar, Blackpool which we attended.
Please note that 'Keeping It Live' is not an agency. It is a
company dedicated to introducing artistes to established agents,
together with agents inter - trading with other agents.

Most of the Showcases that we have attended over the years have
been reviewed by a critic from The Stage & Television Today
newspaper. Click
here to read reviews of previous showcases, some going back
many years. At the bottom of each page, click Older to
go back further.
There is a serious reason for reading these reviews:
It offers a professional opinion on each artiste, removing any
doubt that an agency is trying to sell something that they do not
know.
We are committed to sending representatives to many showcases
throughout the UK in the coming months.
